Tomorrow marks the start of the open championships being held at Carnoustie, one of the toughest links courses on the tour. There are plenty of players that have a real chance at the open this year, and, we are going to break down our top 3 to win outright. With that said, the thick rough and bucket style bunkers at the course are what make it dangerous to have an off day, in order to win here, you need to be perfect from start to finish.
Henrik Stenson – $31.00/+3000 on Crownbet
Stenson is one of the most in-form players right now, second only to Dustin Johnson. Stenson being at $31 is great value, and, as difficult as Carnoustie is, the way the course plays out, is to the strengths of Stenson’s game. Stenson will need to have one of his worst tour events in a while in order to not finish inside the top 10 at this event. He will be included in our best bets at the end of this article for such. We have graded Stenson with a 48.72 grade on our golf model which accounts for course and form and allows for over 600,000 granular variables to be calculated. This grade has put Stenson above Johnson by 0.34, which makes him our pick of the tournament to win.
Dustin Johnson – $14.00/+1400 on Crownbet
Dustin Johnson is the favourite by many here to walk away with this tour event, however, our model has given Johnson a grade that see’s him as the second best option at 48.38, which is just behind our model’s top selection. That isn’t to say that he can’t win, as he is currently one of the best golfers in the world, and, we are including him in our top three chances to win this event because of how good he is. This course, while tricky, is definitely not one that Johnson can’t produce on. There are three holes that will present him with trouble, and that is the third, seventh and ninth, if he can do well on these in particular holes throughout the event, he will have a good shot at taking it out, but, these three holes are where his main challenges will lay.
Justin Rose – $17.00/+1600 on Crownbet
Justin Rose is the next rated player on our model at 47.83, which is a considerable drop off to the first two. However, Justin Rose is definitely not a player to overlook. The Englishman is definitely a player that can see his best at this event on his neighbours turf in Scotland. Rose finished tied 9th in his last tour event, after a few holes that tripped him up and dropped him down the leaderboard. Just like Johnson, the ninth hole is going to be one that Rose is going to have troubles with, he lacks the finesse needed for a tricky hole like this and if he can’t thread the needle, it will be a hole that can take multiple shots off him. However, at his best, he can finish inside the top five.
