It has been a bit of a spell between Punters Guide publishings, but, we are back today, and ready to go for the big card at Hawkesbury. Looking for plays – we have you covered here. Our last guide can be found HERE
Race 1 – Lucrf Super Handicap 1000m
Interesting race here to start the night. A rather open affair on paper, all horses are very closely matched, however, Final Choice gets the nod here. Last two wins were impressive and, closed out both of those races with impressive sectionals. Comes in at a good weight, may have drawn a little wide, but, will push forward quickly and be hard to beat. Propelle is a true chance here. Despite poor first up history, has shown an ability to finish strong, and, will look to do so again here, racing behind the lead pack. In the mix. Sacred Sword has been impressive when grabbing second on both career starts. Will be unperturbed by the big crowd and will run well. Win wouldn’t shock.
Top Pick – Final Choice
Next Best – Propelle
Longshot – Sacred Sword
Race 2 – The Westin Melbourne Handicap 2040m
Pleasuring was rather disappointing last start despite grabbing a minor. Finds a field slightly more competitive here, but, will be better for last run. Unproductive at the track, but, lethal over the distance, winning two of four starts. Maps well here and will give benefit of the doubt. Michael Walker and Pierrocity are clear dangers here. Placed previously over 2100m only just missing the win on that occasion. Possess good race fitness and will be in the mix here. Lopartega is the value point here. Dwayne Dunn has the ride, who has been a consistent jockey at Moonee Valley this spring. Lopartega has drawn a little wide, but, will need to run on pace to account for the short straight at the Valley.
Top Pick – Pleasuring
Next Best – Pierrocity
Longshot – Lopartega
Race 3 – Chandler Macleod Vobis Gold Star 1500m
Widgee Turf is the one to be on here. Dropping in class, will need to carry 60kgs for it, but, is the best horse in this field. Strong finisher, sectionals suggest a quick finish, drawn well, but, will drop back early on. Late strider that will be hard to keep at bay if Zahra can find a seam. Iconoclasm would be the top pick here, if not for being consistently inconsistent. Current favourite at time of writing, and, will more than likely be that at jump. Iconoclasm has his followers, but, needs to keep up with last races efforts to be in this one. Nangawooka won for us here three starts back at big odds ($15), and is double that value here today. Jumps sharply in class, but, this horse thrives in stronger surroundings. Expect a bold finish.
Top Pick – Widgee Turf
Next Best – Iconoclasm
Longshot – Nangawooka
Race 4 – Msc Signs Handicap 2040m
Zahspeed, at its best – is better than any other runner in this race. Multiple winner at this distance, winner at class and has had most success on the going expected tonight. Drawn perfectly on the rail and will look to push forward and lead from start to finish. Good value and over the odds. The Lord Mayor is another that can’t be denied here. Winner of two from four at this range, dropping back in distance which suits, as it was racing out of its depth last two starts. Expect a better effort here. Mr.Garcia could be the value point here. Impressive type that is always there abouts. Winner at range and John Allen is yet to lose on the 6-year-old gelding. Definite danger.
Top Pick – Zahspeed
Next Best – Lord Mayor
Longshot – Mr.Garcia
Race 5 – Ladbrokes 55 Second Challenge Ht3 955m
Esperance is the form horse in this race. Winner of last two, winner at distance but, stepping up slightly in class. However, speed over the short distances suggests that Esperance will be first past the post. Hugh Bowman is 2/2 in the saddle, and, will be looking to complete the hat-trick here today. Biggest danger will be in Prezado, a horse that has a ton of potential, but, rarely actualizes it on race days. Grabbed a minor on two of three starts after spell, and will have race fitness headed into this one. True chance. Essence Of Terror could be a good option here as well, fast start, and, will look to go straight to the front at the start – but will have a lot of company and will need a good start from the wide barrier to achieve that. If not overworked early on – will be right in this one.
Top Pick – Esperance
Next Best – Prezado
Longshot – Essence Of Terror
Race 6 – Sweeney Estate Agents Handicap 1200m
Runson was super impressive when winning last start over the five furlongs, has an extra furlong to deal with today which could be a question mark. Stephen Baster is returning for the ride after strong win last start. Runson is yet to win over this distance and is more suited to the five, but, will get benefit of the doubt here over the six furlong marker. Captain Punch has drawn awkwardly, but, is another one of those horses that is going to be right in this one. Will look to start fast and push for the early lead, has the stamina to go from post-to-post here and a win wouldn’t be out of turn. Stellar Collision is another one that can’t be denied here in a very competitive field. Winner at track and distance previously, winner at class and a consistent performer when fresh. Expect a bold showing.
Top Pick – Runson
Next Best – Captain Punch
Longshot – Star Collision
Race 7 – Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes 1200m
Sunlight despite not being overly exposed to this kind of a race, is the one to beat here. Riding extremely light and ready to fly. Drawn a gun run, will bolt to the lead out of the gate and be hard to track down. This 3-year-old filly has that something special, and, much like Redzel, is one of those horses that excels when in front. One to beat. Voodoo Lad can’t be discounted here. Winner at this track and distance on two from two starts, has shown great late speed previously and is a much better chaser than leader. Expect a bold finish. Malaguerra is just the type of horse that loves to upset big races. Done it many times before, has been rested to be fresh just for this race. At its best – can win here. First up record is very eye watering and will be competitive here.
Top Pick – Sunlight
Next Best – Voodoo Lad
Longshot – Malaguerra
Race 8 – Mitchelton Wines Handicap 1500m
Tamasa is the one to be on here. Impressive winner last two starts, has shown a great turn of foot this prep and rates on top as best of the day. Won two of three starts at this distance, steps up slightly in class, but, has the speed and ability to win this one. One to beat. Kings Command can’t be looked over either. Get’s its normal jockey Ben Thompson back in the saddle here today and, the duo have combined to win at this range and class previously. Dropping in class and carrying a little bit of weight, but, will be right in this one. Call It A Day could be the value point here. Winner three times on five starts at this distance, finds a race similar to last win and can win this.
Top Pick – Tamasa
Next Best – Kings Command
Longshot/Value – Call It A Day
Quaddie for the meet
Race 5 – 2/5/6
Race 6 – 2/10/12
Race 7 – 3/4/14
