Bet Chimps Punters Guide – Newcastle

Newcastle jockey Robert Thorton - by Citrus Zest via Wikimedia

By Citrus Zest [Creative Commons], via Wikimedia Commons

The Punters Guide returns to where it was rebooted not too long ago – the Canterbury race track. With some small fields, and a few competitive races – lets pick the diamonds from the quartz. Backing up from a big day yesterday, including a quaddie win at Canterbury.

Race 1 – HUNGERFORD HILL WINES CG&E CLASS 1 1500m

Salsa Man is the one to be on here. While Bobbio and Triumph Star are clear dangers, Salsa Man has the most upside in this small field of competitors. Dropping in class and will look to ride just off the lead group, has shown a good turn of foot when winning previously and this distance is optimal. Expect a bold showing. Triumph Star and Andrew Adkins are the next best options here, while Bobbio gets strong consideration, the weight claim for Triumph Star puts him in good steed here and will be competitive throughout.

Top Pick – Salsa Man
Next Best – Triumph Star
No longshot – No third dividend

TOP PICK

Race 2 – WESTFIELD KOTARA MAIDEN HANDICAP 1500m

Tye Angland has his best of the day at Newcastle here with Song And A Prayer. Impressive type that is racing well, just yet to crack that maiden, but, has that chance here in a small but competitive field. Drawn the rail and expected to run just behind the lead group, good turn of foot and will be hard to keep out here. Next Best is Homework. The Angland v Ford battle will be a good one to keep an eye on today, and in the first two races, they both have some very capable horses, and Homework is no exception, ran on gamely for a tough second last start and will be looking to do just that little bit more here to get the win. Value runner here is Regal Capital. Rachel King is in good form at the moment nad gets a horse at wide odds that has shown that it can run on strong, and, in this competitive field, has every chance.

Top Pick – Song And A Prayer
Next Best – Homework
Longshot – Regal Capital

TOP PICK

Race 3 – ADVANCED PEST CONTROL MAIDEN PLATE 1330m

Art Of More continues the short price trend here. Tommy Berry in the saddle and placed third up over this distance previously. Last start second over the trip and, looked to be closing off strong only just missing the win. Less competitive field here today, weight not an issue here, and has a lot going for it here, top chance. Seeingisbelieving is the next best here, another of Angland’s top rides for the day, just had its chances increase with the early morning scratching of favourite, Semper Fidelis. First up today after a five month layoff, expect a strong run fresh here. Almerheri is the ebst of the rest here, and another Rachel King longshot here. This race became a lot more open with the above scratching, and, Almerheri has the ability to win this, was against much better competition on first two starts and should find this group a little better. Needs to show something today.

Top Pick – Art Of More
Next Best – Seeingisbelieving
Longshot – Almaheri

TOP PICK

Race 4 – SHARP ELECTRONICS GROUP CLASS 1 900m

Venture Capital has drawn a sticky barrier, but, with it being a small field, won’t have to work as hard to get into a favourable positions. Bullock likes the Newcastle track, and, has his best ride of the day here on Venture Capital. Yet to show its full potential, and, if today is that day – could put this field to rest in the last furlong.

Top Pick – Venture Capital
No next best – No third dividend

TOP PICK

Race 5 – AUSTRALIAN BLOODSTOCK 3YO MAIDEN 900m

Another top chance here from Tye Angland on the untested Happy Bubbles, who has drawn well and by all accounts will look to push forward and dictate the pace of the race. The Ryan stables have indicated that they are extremely happy with the way Happy Bubbles has progressed and are really confident in what it will be able to do today. Expect a big run on debut. Main danger here is in the Lees trained runner Evalina, first up today after a promising debut, then spell. Should have the residual fitness here to remain in this. Another danger horse could be the Godolphin runner – Watching, but, two starts back, no excuses to offer and ran poorly down the straight. Hard to accept as a winning chance after that effort.

Top Pick – Happy Bubbles
Next Best – Evalina
Longshot/Value – Watching

TOP PICK

Race 6 – MACKA’S SAND & SOIL MAIDEN PLATE 1850m

Stage Pass has been right on the mark all prep so far, and, has its best chance to break through here today. Drawn the rail and expected roll forward early and dictate the pace of the race here. Failed to hold on thus far, but, with a slower tempo approach can go the full length here in the lead. My King’s Counsel has been doing its best work late, trying to swoop home late, would have got there last start with a bit more ground when covering a lot to finish fourth, will have the chance here with the extra metres. Shaodw Of Mordor is the best of the rest here, great value at double digits and has was right there last effort when finishing off excruciatingly close with a late push by 0.2L. Can go better here and will be right up there again today.

Top Pick – Stage Pass
Next Best – My King’s Counsel
Longshot – Shadow Of Mordor

TOP PICK

Race 7 – YARRAMAN PARK STUD BM 65 HANDICAP 1850m

Another small but competitive field here where Scratches will be the one to beat, plenty of horses have been scratched form this race, but, Scratches has remained and has the best form leading into this one. The Waller runner was an impressive winner two starts back, and, last start can be forgiven when finishing fifth after running into traffic. Has a lot less in front of er here today and can hit the post hard. Belle Du Sud has been there abouts last handful of starts, has a smaller field which helps here, and less competitive opponents, can be tricky to gauge this horse at times as it gives 100% one run then 40% the next. With less in its surroundings here, expecting a strong finish. Happy Partner is the value runner in this race. As said before, Penza loves to strike at North Coast tracks late in the day with horses over $10 and Happy Partner actually maps well for this one. Impressive third over a similar distance in a similar group of runners last up – and this duo will be better for it. Win won’t surprise here.

Top Pick – Scratches
Next Best – Belle Du Sud
Longshot – Happy Partner

TOP PICK

Race 8 – NATIONWIDE SUPER F&M CLASS 1 1500m

This last race is possibly the trickiest of the entire meet, a strong list of runners and a favourite that is extremely unpredictable. However, we aren’t going to go with the favourite here and we are going with the standout from the Lees stable in Sunreel. Strong winner last up, blowing the field away by a strong 1.5L, looking like it would have done an ever bigger margin had there been more room to run. Goes up a furlong and a half on winning effort, and, is a definite contender here. Value runner of the day. Velocano is one that you can’t look past here either. Strong form and gets Rachel King in the saddle, who placed in a competitive race last start with the horse. Looking to go one better here today and there is nothing that suggests that it can’t. The Waller trained, Joy Forever was a strong winner last start at Hawkesbury over the trip, has a jockey change here today, but, James McDonald is no downgrade. Joy Forever has the pedigree and the proven ability to win at this trip. One to include in exotics here.

Top Pick – Sunreel
Next Best – Velocano
Longshot – Joy Forever

Bet Chimps Punters Guide – Canterbury

Newcastle jockey Robert Thorton - by Citrus Zest via Wikimedia

By Citrus Zest [Creative Commons], via Wikimedia Commons

The Punters Guide returns to where it was rebooted not too long ago – the Canterbury race track. With some small fields, and a few competitive races – lets pick the diamonds from the quartz. Backing up from a decent day at Lismore.

Race 1 – TAB.COM.AU HANDICAP 1100m

Small field here with nothing interesting about it at all. Three horse race, with a clear standout as the betting market reflects. Kerron McEvoy on the Lees trained Miss Fabulous should be too good for this field. No value here, and, unless crafting a multi – best to just avoid this race.

Top Pick – Miss Fabulous
No next best – No second or third dividend

TOP PICK

Race 2 – EVEREST CARNIVAL ON SALE HANDICAP 1200m

This is a small, but, ultra competitive field here, with what looks like Hugh Bowman and Bubbles”n”Troubles having a two horse battle with Josh Parr and Gentle Persuasion. Gentle Persuasion gets the nod here based off incredible dash home in a near last to first performance, and, not only was it first but, it covered enough ground over the final furlong to beat the field by almost two lengths. One to beat again here. If Bowman is able to get Bubbles’n’Troubles to fire today, we could have a mad dash to the line between the two short priced horses here. However, Bubbles’n’Troubles ran on for a very unimpressive third as favourite last start – and, anything similar to that flat showing, it may not even place here. She’s Furline is the only danger to the top two here, but, both map better for this race.

Top Pick – Gentle Persuasion
Next Best – Bubbles’n’Troubles
No longshot – No Third Dividend

TOP PICK

Race 3 – ATC HONG KONG TOUR SPRINT 1100m

Stephan maps very well for this race, stepping down in grade, getting a weight claim with Sweeney on board and has shown that it knows how to hit the line hard. Very well placed in this field and a win is on the cards today. Tommy Berry has the next best here in Tarabai, winner first up previously and great strike rate at distance. Expect a bold run here today. Power Command is a consistent type that is fresh today, and, enjoys this distance. Can run on strongly, and, will be looking to bolt home over the closing stages. One to watch.

Top Pick – Stephan
Next Best – Tarabai
Longshot – Power Command

TOP PICK

Race 4 – #THERACES HANDICAP 1550m

Falcon Island gets another chance here today. Last effort was that poor it received a stewards inquiry and, has trialed good enough to get approval here today. Big question mark for me into last race was the step up in distance which it clearly did not handle. Has the drop in distance here today and is better for it. Much more competitive effort from Falcon Island expected today. Gaugin scored and impressive win last start, and has multiple wins at this distance. Tommy Berry in the saddle here only improves chances. Darci’s Affair is a talented horse that can definitely stun this field on its day.

Top Pick – Falcon Island
Next Best – Gaugin
Longshot – Darci’s Affair

TOP PICK

Race 5 – AUSTRALIAN TURF CLUB HANDICAP 1200m

Lady I Am was disappointing to not win last start – but, is right in the mix here today. Christian Reith is in the saddle and has drawn a mid barrier and will do well to not get stuck in traffic. Expected to run just off the pace and push on down the straight. One to beat here. Next best is the top weighted Zonk with Rachel Hunt riding. Ran on for two flashy seconds over last two starts and will be looking for one better here against a very beatable field. Will need some luck to keep a dashing Lady I Am at bay. Lady Chaflont was a last start winner, and, did so impressively. Racing anything near that here today will produce a strong win at double digit odds.

Top Pick – Lady I Am
Next Best – Zonk
Longshot – Lady Chaflont

TOP PICK

Race 6 – HYLAND RACE COLOURS HANDICAP 1900m

White Boots scored an impressive win last start, and will be looking to replicate that success, however, it will need to do so from a wide draw. Another impressive runner from the Kim Waugh stables, White Boots has shown great pace and turn of foot over the last furlong to say that it is every chance here today. Fantastic Man drops in class here today and is one to keep safe, has the ability but, has come up just short over last two starts, needs to show something here today. Realise Potential is back out again today after scoring for the punters Guide at $41 odds previously. Retains winning jockey from that ride, and, based off last effort, there is no reason that success can’t be replicated here today in a very open affair.

Top Pick – White Boots
Next Best – Fantastic Man
Longshot – Realise Potential

TOP PICK

Race 7 – RIBCHESTER STANDING AT DARLEY 1250m

Star Of The Seas is the pick of the day here at plus money. Short body of work thus far, but, all three efforts have been impressive, including a strong win last start over the distance in a similar field of runners. Minor step up in grade which shouldn’t be of concern here today. Proved to good for field last start and, should do so again here today. Bull Market is the next best here, winner at distance and has beaten fields better than this. Good start needed to roll on near the front, and, could prove to hard to track down. Image Neat at massive odds wouldn’t shock here either. Winner at distance before and jockey has ridden to a place on one attempt. Not just here to make up numbers and will be competitive.

Top Pick – Star Of The Seas
Next Best – Bull Market
Longshot – Neat Image

Bet Chimps Punters Guide – Lismore

Newcastle jockey Robert Thorton - by Citrus Zest via Wikimedia

By Citrus Zest [Creative Commons], via Wikimedia Commons

After a strong start to the Punters Guide it has hit a bit of a purple a patch. Expecting some improvement here today with a small race card at Lismore, with some stand out horses at the meeting.

Race 1 – LISMORETURFCLUB.COM.AU 3YO MAIDEN 1200m

Handful of untested runners in this one – but, we are going to go with the horse that has race experience under its belt, and has been ever so close on its last two tries, finishing third against better company. Mikuro is a classy Kuroshio filly trained by the Lees stable, who are very good with young horses. Expecting to see Mikuro get its first career win in this one. Hayburner is the next one to keep an eye on. Unraced as of yet, but, has McGuren in the saddle and only needs a decent start to be right in this one. Value runner here is in Eulailah, who has two races to its name, and, will be looking to go better than the third on last outing. Has the ability, but, will need luck.

Top Pick – Mikuro
Next Best – Hayburner
Longshot – Eulailah

TOP PICK

Race 2 – THE NORTHERN STAR MAIDEN HANDICAP 1516m

Another tough race here of tired maidens – and none that have standout for, but, the one that has shown the most in recent efforts is Rothford, who has two minors in eleven starts, both coming in the last four races. Hellyer in the saddle is a plus, but, the horse needs to show a little more here, it is lucky that this race doesn’t have any genuine lead horses. Luke Rolls and Hologram are the next best here. Exceed and Excel horse yet to flex its pedigree, today could be the day is it is due for a good run, but again, not been overly impressive so far in career. Value runner here is Red Flyer who presents well today, and has been somewhat consistent without a win over last handful of runs. Could go close again here today.

Top Pick – Rothford
Next Best – Hologram
Longshot – Red Flyer

TOP PICK

Race 3 – LISMORE & DISTRICT WORKERS CLUB 1200m

Almas maps well for this one, and should win with McGuren in the saddle, and will be our top pick for this one, but, if you are looking for a little more value than just above evens – Queen Of Kingston is a real smokey in this one. Impressive form before a spell, and, if can recapture some of that form here fresh, it could be enough to take this one from the favourite.

Top Pick – Almas
No next best – No third dividend

TOP PICK

Race 4 – NORTH COAST PETROLEUM 4YO & UP 1200m

Savanna Jeune is the form runner here, coming in off a strong second last start against better horses. Drawn a wide-ish gate for this one, but, has jockey returning to the saddle from last up effort. One to watch. Next best here is Star Stryker. Last start ran on strongly for third and was beaten by a horse having a great race. Second up efforts previously have Star Stryker right in this one, having two minors from three attempts. Expected to do better here today. The value horse of this race is Dark Comedy. Ran on unrelentingly to grab a third last start, and, with a change it racing tactics here over a preferred distance, could lead from start to finish. If Dark Comedy does grab the elad in this one – has the motor to not give it up.

Top Pick – Savanna Jeune
Next Best – Star Stryker
Longshot – Dark Comedy

TOP PICK

Race 5 – BOOK YOUR CUP DAY PACKAGE NOW 1516m

Howick is the pick of the race here. Impressive win last start and against a field that doesn’t present as good as last outing. Retains winning jockey from that effort and will look to replicate that success again. Drawn well and will be able to drop back behind the lead horses here. One to beat. Next best here is Polemic, it has been racing well and is overdue a win, second up form is the only question mark here, if Polemic can get over this hurdle of fitness, it will be right in the mix here. Grand Casadora is a real smokey in this one, winner at distance, beaten horses of this caliber before, and has a jockey in the saddle that knows how to win on her. Last run two weeks ago, fading away for fifth, better for that race here today and a win wouldn’t surprise here.

Top Pick – Howick
Next Best – Polemic
Longshot – Grand Casadora

TOP PICK

Race 6 – LISMORE CUP THURSDAY 20 SEPTEMBER 1400m

Raymond Spokes is back on a familiar horse here today, one that he has won on once and come second on twice in three races. He is back in the saddle for Chateauroux here today – and the prospects look bright in a field that isn’t overly impressive. Bright prospects at good odds today. Next best here is the top weighted Red Wolf, who presents well after a good third last up. Leah Kilner is a young jockey you should have no problem backing here, and, will be able to bring the best out of Red Wolf, Red Wolf even at 75% should be too strong for this field. Dark Image is the best of the rest here in what presents as a value race. Dark Image scored a hard fought win last start and is positioned to strike again here today. Longer odds and has shown flashy speed in the closing stages previously Definite chance.

Top Pick – Chateauroux
Next Best – Red Wolf
Longshot – Dark Image

TOP PICK

Race 7 – TAB.COM.AU CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1200m

The Ridge presents Matt McGuren the chance to bookend this race meet. Strong winner last start on return from spell, second up today and placed second up previously. Good strike rate at distance and will be able to hit the line hard again here today. One to beat. Granola State is definitely one to watch here dropping in class. Not the best at finishing races off, but, against a lower quality field of competitors will have every chance again here today. Royal Equiano is the best of the rest here. Form horse and most consistent, won at distance and placed at track and distance previously. Placed multiple times in class without a win as of yet, but, can get that elusive win here today.

Top Pick – The Ridge
Next Best – Granola State
Longshot – Royal Equiano

Bet Chimps Punters Guide – Quirindi

Newcastle jockey Robert Thorton - by Citrus Zest via Wikimedia

By Citrus Zest [Creative Commons], via Wikimedia Commons

After what can only be described as a dogs breakfast in racing over the weekend. The Punters Guide is back and looking to go big here at Quirindi. Let’s get stuck into this punters guide.

Race 1 – LIVERPOOL PLAINS CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1450m

The opener here is a small, but ultra competitive field. The short priced favourite here is Chicoltin, who is about ready to win, but, we are going to go with Skye Bogenhuber and Red Braids here. Last up, Red Braids over worked a little which opened the door for Lady Chaflont to burst through and take the race, this time around, the field should make her press as much as that one did, and, Red Braids will have every chance to go one better than a second last start here.

Top Pick – Red Braids
No next best – No Third Dividend

TOP PICK

Race 2 – COFFEE POT CATERING MAIDEN PLATE 1600m

Kristenesen is the obvious pick here on form – but, looking for a bit more value than what Kristensen offers – the Greg Ryan ride, Laranta maps well for this race at value. Has run well at this trip previously gets a top Sydney jockey in the saddle and will be comfortable here. Laranta is the value pick of this race if Kristensen should fail to fire today. Myriads with Josh Oliver riding is another to look out for. Again, if Kristensen fails to find its best here, Myriads wil be given every chance as it enjoys the distance and the conditions suit.

Top Pick – Kristensen
Next Best – Laranta
Longshot – Myriads

TOP PICK

Race 3 – BROWNING MOTORS BENCHMARK 56 1600m

Gibbons has been hit and miss for the Lees stable at the moment – but, he has the chance to hit here on familiar ride, La Bieri Choisie, who comes in with solid form, history of winning at distance and has won with Gibbons in the saddle previously. Maps well here and if Gibbons is in form – will prove hard to beat. The Outcast ridden by Travis Wolfgram has drawn perfectly to upset the favourite here, getting the gun run on the rail, that it will use to push forward early from. Front runners tend to have an easier trip at the Quirindi track, which only increases The Outcast’s prospects. Another ride from Josh Oliver here that shouldn’t be overlooked is the 9-year-old gelding, Apache Lad. Dropping in class steeply, winner at distance and class previously. Conditions favour here and a win certainly wouldn’t surprise.

Top Pick – La Bieri Choisie
Next Best – The Outcast
Longshot – Apache Lad

TOP PICK

Race 4 – QPP MEDIA MAIDEN HANDICAP 1200m

Another race here that doesn’t really show much value for punters – One Invincible Cat is another under evens shorty here that looks hard to beat. Another of the Gibbons/Lees combinations again here today – and this one could arguably be the best one. Coming in with sound form and being right on the cusp of a win. Second up today and ready to win. For something with a bit more value and the potential for the upset, Sunday Special has been in equally as good form as the short priced favourite some could argue. Ran in second on last two, strips fitter third up here and looks ready to go. A definite chance here. Something at much longer odds, that wouldn’t surprise if it won, is the Graham ridden, Sticks’N’Stones. Drawn terribly, but, has the ability to overcome this and push forward. The Bernardini filly has a lot of potential that it hasn’t yet shown. Big run wouldn’t shock.

Top Pick – One Invincible Cat
Next Best – Sunday Special
Longshot – Sticks’N’Stones

TOP PICK

Race 5 – QUIRINDI AUTO BENCHMARK 59 1000m

Comingle pulled up lame at the end of its last race, so, last placing can be wiped from the memory, been given time to rest and recover and, if can find its second-up form here, is better than this field. Won by a neck over a similar distance on a strong run, if healthy, is the top chance this race. Sister Joy is another to watch out for here. Unimpressive last start, despite finishing third, and time before that was even worse. However, if we track back three races, the jockey last rode this horse, they won impressively. Expected to track on speed here today, and, if Sister Joy can hit the lead, will be hard to beat. The best of the rest here is Mac’s Reward. Dropping in class here, and, has winning jockey return to the saddle. Back to poeak distance and, looks ready to strike.

Top Pick – Comingle
Next Best – Sister Joy
Longshot/Value – Mac’s Reward

TOP PICK

Race 6 – TAB.COM.AU BENCHMARK 67 HANDICAP 1200m

Mr.Bonjove is the ride you want to be on here. Rachel Murray is riding well at the moment, and the favourite Kettering, has been underwhelming since resuming every start. Mr.Bonjove is coming into this one with a strong form line, and the Hinchinbrook sprinter should be competitive again like it was last up. Expecting it to go one better than last start. Abberation drops significantly in class today for this race, and should go well. Yet to win first up – but has hit the minors on two of three occasions and a first-up win could be on the cards here today. De La Hoya is the value horse here. Another of the first-up runners here today, dropping in class, and you can never discredit a Lonhro horse. One of the chances here today.

Top Pick – Mr.Bonjove
Next Best – Abberation
Longshot – De La Hoya

TOP PICK

Race 7 – TAB WE LOVE A BET CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1200m

Best ride of the day here for the young Jake Hall in Mystic Splendour, yet to be out of the podium on first three starts, has a tougher assignment here today, but, more than capable of taking it up. Was odds on favourite when winning last start, and, eyeing off the double here is achievable. Winner at distance previously, drawn a tricky barrier and will do well to not get caught wide, will look to push up early to counter this. Finne Realta is the next best here, however, it another of the top hopes with a dreadful barrier draw, well wide to start. Another of the horses here that will look to start fast and get to or near the lead, will do well to not over race early. Expect a bold run. Value horse here is Seize Them All. First up today and yet to win or place in this scenario, but, drawn the rail and should get a gun run throughout the race. Will look to ride midfield in cover, and, has every chance to push on late.

Top Pick – Mystic Splendour
Next Best – Finne Realta
Longshot – Seize Them All
